My visual activity consists of multiple strands -- graphic design, photography, and studio work in drawing, mixed media, and printmaking. My immediate interest is in drawing with soft pastels.

When working with pastels my intent is to search for the optimal point of interplay between the aesthetics of pure form, the idiosyncrasies and demands of the medium, and the visual sources rooted in my perception and understanding of the prairie environment.

This search involves both invention and description. Invention ignores shared visual reference points. Description can reflect common visual experience. My work moves back and forth along this continuum between invention and description - sometimes seeming almost wholly invented, at other times alluding to shared visual reference points relating to the prairie landscape. These reference points may shift between ground and elevated views that may suggest aerial or even mapping patterns. I am most pleased when neither invention nor description seems compromised, when the image has integrity as both abstraction and metaphor.
